Fix It Friday: Cobble Hill Towers

Fix It Friday is a new series of posts highlighting work done by Walker Restoration Consultants in honor of its 10^th year in business. Located in Brooklyn, New York, the iconic Cobble Hill Towers were built between 1877-1890 and are located in the Cobble Hill Historic District, as designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). The buildings were originally developed by Alfred T. White with architecture from William Field & Son as model tenements or “Improved Dwellings for the Laboring Classes”.

The owner contacted Walker Restoration Consultants seeking turret and oriel window repairs. Before restoration, the turret had cracked; there was broken brickwork, open masonry joints, failing turret roofing, and waterproofing was needed. The oriel window assembly had water infiltration, deteriorated wood joists, damaged wood framing, and exterior sheathing.

Walker Restoration provided an assessment of the current condition and developed a recommended strategy for repair that is consistent with the LPC guidelines. Walker also filed and obtained an LPC Permit for Minor Work (PMW), Certificate of No Effect (CNE), and NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) Alteration Type-2 Permit. In addition, Walker oversaw construction administration throughout the project. Compared to overhauls, renovations, or wholesale dismantling and reconstruction, Walker Restoration Consultants’ services represent a substantially smaller investment in time and money, and are less disruptive.
